How to Fix Faint or Banded Printing 

Do receipts print out with vertical white bands or do they appear faint? Sounds like the thermal head needs cleaning

The most frequent cause for faint or banded printing is a dirty thermal head and platen roller.  Cleaning them takes just a few minutes. See the steps below:

Caution 1: Never clean your printers with alcohol, benzine, thinner or other similar solvents.

Caution 2: After hours of use, the thermal head and its surroundings can be very hot. Let it cool before cleaning it, and do not touch the thermal head with your fingers or hard objects.

How to clean the thermal head

It is recommended to clean the thermal head periodically (generally every 3 months) to maintain receipt print quality.

Depending on the paper roll used, paper dust may stick to the platen roller and the paper may not be fed correctly. To remove the paper dust, clean the platen roller as well.

Epson TM-T20 series

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Open the paper roll cover.
  3. Clean the thermal elements of the thermal head with a cotton swab moistened with an alcohol solvent (ethanol or IPA).

Epson TM-m30 series

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Open the paper roll cover.
  3. Clean the thermal elements of the thermal head/platen roller with a cotton swab moistened with an alcohol solvent (ethanol or IPA).
